Last Saturday I watched my very first Ravens game. (Of course it was a Ravens game. Sorry folks, but I am a Baltimore girl, heart and soul. If I succumb to fandom of any sort of sports team, it'll be the Baltimore teams. No matter how much we suck on a regular basis [for reals, when is the last time dem O's were anything worth talking about?])
I was up at Lithia's house to play with the new puppies (pics forthcoming, as soon as I upload them off the camera), but I figured I'd stick around to watch the game. I honestly haven't the slightest clue what made me decide to watch a football game. I've only recently even started to pick up any knowledge of the game, and that's only because I'm literally surrounded by football fans--osmosis is a bitch sometimes. I've never had the tiniest inkling of interest in it, to be honest. I'm not a big sports person; the only sport I've ever had real interest in is rowing. What the hell possessed me to want to watch a game all of a sudden? I can't say as it was a desire to fit in--when have I ever cared about fitting in? I made it through 27 years without caring about football. I don't think it was real interest in the game itself, or in the fact that Baltimore is in the AFC Championship after that game. It was probably my own morbid curiosity. It's gotten me in trouble before, but I still give in to it.
It's an interesting game. I had to have a few things explained to me, like what the hell a down is. But with that and a few other facts under my belt, the game sort of unravelled in my head. What had before been an incomprehensible mob of dudes in colorful spandex throwing an oblong ball around a field and basically beating the shit out of each other was suddenly... making sense.
It was weird, lemme tell you.
Apparently this was a good game for me to start with, too. It was brutal, it was ridiculously close, and it was... exciting.
The weirdest part is that I enjoyed it. I found myself grinning like a fool during that last minute of play, just like Lithia and John. Is this what fandom is? Getting excited over this pseudo-bloodsport?
I will probably end up be seeing the Ravens-Steelers game this weekend (Rance: I'm predicting the Ravens will win by at least 1,000 points.). And if Baltimore ends up in the Superbowl I'll probably end up seeing that too (as long as someone is having a party, anyway).
This just feels really weird. I'm interested in football. At least in an intellectual sense.
I kinda want to know a bit more about it. Figure out a bit of the strategy, even. I doubt I'll ever become one of those rabid fans who owns three jerseys, all signed, and tries to score tickets to every game possible, and follows the team every single weekend, who whines the rest of the year because there's no football on. That's not me, I reserve my passion for other things (like writing!). But for now, I am kind of enjoying this new interest. Weird, huh?

The Bank Job*: meh.
The Mummy 3: Ok, folks, I'm not going to lie: I have terrible taste in movies. I don't deny it, and as long as I enjoy it, then who really cares? I mean, I love Ghost Ship ferfucksake. I own a movie called Dead & Breakfast, and heart every minute. I own Independence Day! And at least one M.Night Shamawhatever movie! (However, on the flip side, I own almost all of the Pixar movies, and at least two Miyazaki films. And a couple Coen Brothers films. And The Goonies. [Shut up that's an awesome movie!])
I loved the first two Mummy movies. What's not to love for a girl like me? There's mummies, dead things, fake Ancient Egypt (and oh, how fake it was), and best of all John Hannah! (You thought I was going to say Brendan Fraser, didn't you? Well, ha! I go for the skinny kinda weird looking Scot ANY day over him.) I have been in love with all things Ancient Egypt since I was but a wee girl. I swore up and down for years that I would attend the University of Chicago and become an Egyptologist! (Alas and alack, I didn't get in to the UofC, and then I quickly realized I don't want to dig. But that's a different story altogether.)
(And why shouldn't I <3 John Hannah? Have you ever seen Four Weddings and a Funeral? I could care less about Hugh Grant, I was all about John Hannah. His speech at the funeral makes me cry every single time.)
But back to the Mummy movies. I own the first two. I love them. They're cheese to the Nth degree, and I remain unashamed. I have no problems with the suspension of disbelief, as far as these films go.
So I bought the third one, sight unseen. Because I'm an absolute DVD whore.
And here's where you think I admit to regretting every dollar I wasted. But I ain't gonna. To tell you true, I didn't mind it. It's decent enough, I suppose (I probably have to turn in my Pajiba card now). There were two things that bugged me, other than the Yetis and the field goal thing. The first was Maria Bello. She's sure a pretty lady, and she was fab in A History of Violence, but her accent was atrocious. That was the single thing I had a hard time suspending the disbelief for.
The other thing that bugged me was Alex. I am not sure how a kid who had a British accent in the second film of the series, could be American all of a sudden. I mean, he grew up in England, likely went to a posh English school, etc etc etc... shouldn't he still sound like a Brit?
Oh well, whatever. Not the most offensive film I've ever seen, but certainly not the best eever.
Saturday's Ravens v Titans game: the first football game I ever sat down intentionally to watch. But more on that later on.
Coming up: I have Burn After Reading to watch hopefully this week sometime, or else perhaps when Julie's down here this weekend. I have to be in the right mood for Coen brothers, though. And I've heard mixed things about this one. Maybe I should return it and just watch Fargo again instead.
I've also gotten a hold of S2 of The Tudors, which I started on Friday. I've only gotten through two episodes so far. Quite enjoyable. I get such a big kick out of that show. It's not precisely accurate, as far as the actual history goes, but it's mostly pretty close. I'm not the stickler for historical accuracy I used to be. I also don't mind that JRM is not a ginger like Henry VIII was. I wonder if they'll get around to Elizabeth the First. It is called The Tudors, after all.
*I feel as though I should feel like taking the time to link all the movies. Or at least upload pictures of the DVD covers. But... meh. Don't feel like it. If you wanna know what they look like, hit up amazon or netflix your own damn self.
